Ten Beers You Should Drink This December!

Whether enjoying time with family or relaxing after a stressful day of shopping here are ten beers that will enhance the experience. Not all of these beers are new or seasonals, some of them (such as Chimay Grand Reserve) are great anytime!

1) Boulevard Bourbon Barrel Quad: This quadruple, was aged in bourbon barrels and cherries were added to account for the “angel’s share” of evaporated beer during aging. It is only around for a limited time and a cant miss!

2) Anchor Christmas Ale: The recipe changes every year, but this spiced ale is always excellent. Perfect for the holiday celebrations.

3) Lagunitas Sucks Holiday Ale: I can not say enough good things about this amazing beer. It is everything one wants in an American DIPA and more, if you can still find it, get it and enjoy!

4) Gouden Carolus Noel: One of the best, of the many, spiced Belgian Christmas ales available. This beer is boozy, complex and will certainly warm everyone up.

5) Bell’s Winter White Ale: For the less intense beer drinkers or those just looking for a change. Light, fruity and like everything Bell’s makes, excellent quality.

6) Monchshof Schwarzbier: The closest thing the Germans make to a stout. Roasty and light, one of the best examples of the style available in America.

7) Stone Double Bastard: This beer is strong, complex and delicious, simply a beer that has to be experienced for one’s self.

8 ) Chimay Grand Reserve: Available year round, but this is one of the best beers in the world according to Rate Beer (which is a totally deserved ranking). It is even better around Christmas!

9) Samuel Smith’s Winter Welcome Ale: This classic British winter warmer is smooth, malty and a little stronger than your average British pale ale.

10) Liefmans Fruitesse: This beer holds lots of great fruit and is considerably sweeter than the style should be. However, that is precisely what makes it a great “family” beer, Aunt “whomever, who hates beer” may change her mind on this one.

Ten (fairly common) Beers You Should be Drinking This November!

The marzens and pumpkin beers have for the most part departed, leaving us with an even more eclectic bunch of seasonal offerings. Traditionally, this time of year is dominated by malt heavy offerings, coffee stouts and spiced beers. While it is still early in the month, I thought I would highlight a few good beers that should not be extremely rare and may (or may not) be overlooked. Not all of the beers I have included are seasonals, some are just plain good.

1) Bell’s Cherry Stout
Thick, warm, chocolaty stout balanced by tart Montmorency cherries. What more do I need to say?

2) Founder’s Breakfast Stout
An oatmeal stout brewed with coffee and chocolate. Perfectly balanced and absolutely amazing.

3) Odell’s Mountain Standard Double Black IPA
An amazing blend of toasty malts and citrusy hops.

4) St. Bernardus Christmas Ale
Dark fruits and spices, if that isn’t Christmas, I don’t know what is!

5) Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale
A rich, refreshing, dry hopped IPA, perfect for those holiday parties!

6) New Belgium Frambozen
It is not out yet, but should arrive anytime. This brown ale is brewed with fresh raspberries and very tough to beat on thanksgiving.

7) Baltika No. 6 Porter
While this Baltic Porter is not a seasonal, its soft roast-y flavors and slight sweetness are perfect for this season.

8 ) Avery Old Jubilation
This malty strong ale pairs well with cold nights and many of the traditional seasonal fare.

9) Schneider-Weisse Adventinus
This wheat doppelbock is available year round and considered by many to be one of the best beers in the world. The complex malt profile highlighted by the wheat and yeast make this an excellent sipper on cold nights.

10) Bell’s Java Stout
I hate to include the same brewery twice on the same list, but man, this is a nice beer to wake up or warm up to.

Mother’s Brewing Company Winter Grind and Bell’s Java Stout (Review)

Yes, I know it is 9:30 am, but it is one of my few days off, and I am very excited about these two beers. They are coffee stouts after all (a.k.a. breakfast beers, speaking of which, had I been thinking, I would have picked up a Founder’s Breakfast Stout to compare here aw well….next time…).

Anyway, Mother’s is Springfield, Missouri’s own microbrewery. They began operations in the old Butternut Bread bakery downtown this past spring. So far they have been pretty impressive, producing solid craft beers. I expect good things from them in the future. I am excited about this particular beer (The Winter Grind) because they are using a coffee blend from locally owned Mud House Coffee. Bell’s is one of my favorite producers and has yet to even come close to let me down. The only exception to that may be “Hell Hath No Fury” or the “Anniversary Ale”, both of which were good, just not the transcendent experience I was expecting…

As to the actual beers being tasted, both are, obviously a very very dark brown in color, with a little bit of head. The Mother’s has a tiny bit more than Bell’s. Naturally, both smell like coffee (being as I am not a an expert that is about as complex as my analysis on the aroma will get), the Mother’s has a much stronger coffee flavor and I think I smelled a hint of chocolate on the Bell’s. The Bell’s is nice, bitter, lots of coffee and a little burnt chocolate, but still pretty mellow and subdued. The Mother’s is much more simple, there is a lot of tasty coffee in here. It is a bit rough when paired side by side with Bell’s (but then again, most beers are). It is still very good and essentially, lightly carbonated coffee. The Bell’s is far more complex and balanced so I will have to give it the edge, Mother’s is considerably cheaper and both are a pretty good way to wake up! Both are good in their own right, the Mother’s is cheaper ($6-8 a six pack), stronger and more refreshing, as it is much heavier on the coffee. The Bell’s is more complex, better balanced and comes with a heftier price tag (around $15 a six pack). So, try them both if you can, unfortunately, Mother’s does not distribute outside of Springfield, yet.

Some other coffee beers you will definitely want to try are Founder’s Breakfast Stout is a staple as well as Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast, Brasserie Du Ciel Peche Mortel (which ages very nicely) and the upcoming Schlafly Coffee Stout. I would also consider the Southern Tier Java, this beer is a beast at 10.4%, for the really hard days at work….
